I always think those standard of living comparisons do NYC a disservice. They generally include the cost of keeping a car, which most people in those other cities do but very few New Yorkers do. And a monthly metrocard is far cheaper and frankly more convenient.

That's horrible. Senior software engineers can easily get those salaries in the midwest where the cost of living is much, much less.
