Do GitHub Stars even matter? (opens in new tab)

I tend to use the stars as a type of bookmarking system - things I don't want to fork, but do want to keep tabs on. It wasn't until later that I discovered their original intent was apparently something different.

On sites like Packagist.org, I believe that they are used in conjunction with the download count to rank search results
