Does FTP really have better experience in 2021? I'm pretty sure the last time I saw better performance from FTP was in the previous century and, unlike FTP, having built-in error detection and recovery is pretty nice.
In my experience with NCBI it's better mostly because other tools or schemes provided by them kinda sucked, but FTP servers were there since forever and grew to be well organized and stable. Outside of this niche, no.
