Target Display Mode doesn't work on any of the 5K iMacs, from what I understand.

You are correct! IIRC, it wouldn't have been possible (or at least, wouldn't have been very easy) with the external display protocols available at the time the first 5K iMacs came out, and they've never gone back and revisited the idea.
