Why is it Putin's business what Ukraine thinks of NATO?

Because Ukraine is neighboring Russia and is of strategic importance in its security considerations.

Once ukraine is in nato russia has no leverage over what kind of arms are deployed there for instance.

Did you hear about the Carribean crisis?

What I'm taking from this response is that it wasn't his business to do what he's doing right now.

The US cannot blame itself for being irresponsible in Ukraine (because the US is never wrong, not in the moment at least) hence the narrative of Putin being the new Hitler trying to build a new great russia (or similar).
