We'll see whether "dark, cold winter mornings" will have an effect again. And what the effect of the first or second child endangered by a plow or cold weather is.

Schools tend to close or have delayed starts on days the plows are out.

Also, children are much less independent (as in, they spend less time unsupervised) than they were when this was attempted back in the day..
