Don't you need a MS developer key to build it or something now? I imagine this all could be patched, but not sure how difficult.
Regarding other companies, Facebook for example allows getting code by email. This is very different. MS disables every recovery option you set up, and mandates a phone.

I built it myself a couple of months ago and I didn't need any key. I just cloned the source from GitHub and compiled it following the build instructions.
