I don't think we can really blame slow languages.

Implementations of languages like javascript, ruby - and I would presume python and php - are a lot faster than they used to be.

I think most slowness is architectural.

Js, php are faster; ruby, python not so much

ruby is about 10 times faster than it was 10 years ago.
