I think the real change is not to care. The implications of red tribe v blue tribe don't scare as much as the actuality of what lies underneath.
What lies underneath is the rather stupid "I can't send emoji how you do, so I will send a plaintext which says
<the other person said> "what you said" with a smiley face next to it
as literal text.
Green v Blue, is trivialising an underlying technical problem. Apples decision is not respecting how sensible interoperability is meant to work.
