I run an instance of some ~450 users, ~50 active, on a managed k8s cluster and it's costing me ~200usd/month. So I'm actually moving to my own DC where I get more than twice the resources for less than half the price.

If you have DC and power sponsored you can get real far.

That's ridiculously expensive for that tiny amount of users

You could easily host 50 active users on a single VPS for a 10th of that cost. masto.host has a plan that covers 100 active users for $19/mo.
