Personally I think it boils down to the same thing as when we talk about Munich, when everybody who lives there calls it München.

This is idiotic. I live in London. To the French it is Londres. Why would anyone care?

Perhaps New York should everywhere be pronounced as someone from New York would pronounce it.

Who is objecting to Kiev? I just don't get it. If this is coming from Ukrainians it is very quixotic (now explain how you pronounce that!)
