Then, it's going to be pretty hard to defend that the "downside-related" usage and the "upside-related" usage are anywhere near each other in terms of volume.
To be clearer: yeah, some people are probably creating deepfakes of their own, consensual GFs somewhere on the planet - and more fun to them. There are also comedians doing great things with that.
But let's not kid ourselves into the actual, massively majoritary usage: making someone else's life just a tad shittier, either for profit or out of pure meanness.
I don't know if there is academically sanctionned data about it to appease the HN-crowd, but when it comes out and says "yeah, statistically, talented comedians and kinky couples are only a fraction of the scammers and revenger-p.rn users.", don't count me suprised.
