Probably didn't want everyone standing up in the aisle messing with the overheads all at once.

As soon as they said something was wrong I’d be working to get any important work off my laptop and onto my phone or any other alternative storage I could think of. Also, wallet/passport/keys etc come out of my backpack and into my pockets.

You should do this before you leave for the airport. It's much more likely that your laptop is stolen or accidentally taken by another passenger.
