I think I still have the annotated listings somewhere.
The key to a proper April 1st day prank in the past was the mark not realizing it was April 1st. Now basically anyone who is on the Internet has their hand tipped (usually the night before if living in the US because of the global nature of the Internet), thus any good real-world pranking will fall flat as the mark will see the prank coming a mile away. The Internet pranks (which are usually groan-worthy to begin with) don't work either because there are so many of them that the situation becomes immediately obvious... pranks only work well in isolation.
In the grand scheme of things, I'll take the death of "April Fool's Day" if it comes with every positive thing the Internet has allowed, but there's no doubt that "April Fool's Day" is dead in the 1st world (as of 2004 or so)... killed by the Internet.
