The fact that living in big cities is a risk factor for schizophrenia seems to suggest to me that it is a disorder of excitotoxicity at the network rather than cellular level. It could be that many of our modern psychological ailments share this same etiology, and that the disease you ultimately arrive at is only determined by your genetic predisposition to prefrontal, medial, temporal, or occipital dysfunction.
