Ask HN: How do you use the Fediverse?

I recently wrote some rather disparaging comments on how I see the Fediverse, but I do want to like it, so I thought I'd give Fediverse proponents some space to talk.

So how do you use the Fediverse? How did you decide which instance to sign up to? Which of Mastodon/Pleroma/Akkoma/etc do you use and why?

I was on the Fediverse for a while with my own Mastodon instance a few years ago[0]

Then a minor update broke it[1]

Have not been back since

Like you, I want to like it / use it ... but it simply takes too much mental space on top of the other social media / comm channels I use (professional and personal)
