Right now I'm in the EU, but eventually around January I will have to go back to my home third world country. Took this as an opportunity to switch career. With all this covid19 stuff, remote work is going strong, so I joined a programming Bootcamp (CS basics and back-end web specialization with Node.js/PHP or Java) to prepare myself better for a programming job. I have always "programmed" (crappy code) but never professionally, just for fun and game hacks to pay for college. What I'm looking for now is a remote job that pays around 800 euros (950 dollars). Having in mind that I speak and write English, plus in my home country I will have fiber internet so connection issues won't be a problem. If you guys have experiences or any tips about this kind of thing please share. So how high (or low) are my chances? How can I maximize it?

So I never really found a practical use for mathematics while I was in school, so I never really paid attention to it, basically just studied for grades. Now that I have some interest in ML, I have come to realize that I suck at math. Help me fix that, my ultimate goal being the ability to work through Bishop's Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning or being able to understand ML papers. I know I mostly need Probability, Statistics, Calculus and Linear Algebra. For now I'm studying precalc (Stewart). Next steps are:

Probability: Introduction to Probability - Blitzstein & Hwang.

Statistics: Introduction to Mathematical Statistics - Hogg & al.

Calculus: Calculus, Early Transcendentals - James Stewart & al.

Linear Algebra: Introduction to Linear Algebra - Gilbert Strang.

What are your picks in those subject? Are these enough?

Edit: preferably books that use the metric system.

Hey everyone. So because of some personal problems, I have to go back to my home country in the next 6 months probably (third world country). I want take this as an opportunity to create my own online business (if I can not find a remote job that pays well), no idea in what yet, just starting to brainstorm. But because I'm really new to this, I'm looking for your experiences and tips to minimize mistakes along the way. I'm not looking to make much, 500$ a month would be good enough (perks of living in a third world country I guess). The biggest problem I face is that targeting local market is not an option, people are poor around here. I have the next 6 month free, so I want to at least launch something quick and dirty every month and see where it goes (if you have some ideas to share I'm all ears). Thanks.

So I have some Saas idea I want to test out. But I don't want, nor have money to host them on a VPS or something for now. So I thought about about hosting them at home as I have an old DELL Optiplex laying around. My internet is fiber 1gb down/500mb up. What are the downside? For those who has done it, any tips? Are you satisfied?

My goal? None particularly, just for knowledge/fun and this year I decided on programming and maybe getting deeper in computer science if it goes well. I'm not looking to build something meaningful right away, I'm interested in the craft, the art and all techniques a beginner can get. My math is rusty AF. Need to work on that also, already have some books to use as refresher. I'm an accountant if that helps. So for now from looking around, here are my options:

1. How to Design Programs, 2nd Edition. Uses a language they call Scheme, and is free online.

2. SICP, but this one seams to require higher levels math so it scares me. Also Scheme and free Online.

3. Eloquent JavaScript, 3rd Edition (but a friend of mine told me to avoid learning with a language that has no "type" as first language, had a simple explanation but still don't really get the meaning of this). JavaScript and free online.

4. Introduction to Computing Systems, 3rd Edition. This one is more technical as it dives into how a computer works before teaching how to program in C and C++. I really like the approach but I'm afraid of the difficulties that will come with it.

5. Anything Python, as everywhere it is suggest to beginners.

If you have any suggestions on how I should tackle this, other books to suggest, road-map, whatever don't hesitate to comment, I'm open to anything, what would you do if you were me?
