If I'm to buy a new laptop, it must remain "superficially" identical/comparable. I want better performance, but what's ciritcal is getting as much battery life and improved thermals as I can. Even the screen is not as much of an issue to me as those 2.
Now I've been looking at some products offered by thinkpad modders, but knowledge of the non free bios weighs some on my mind.
Since acquiring this laptop, beside remaining abreast of news about Pine and others striving toward software/hardware freedom, I've totally cauterized myself from the greater consumer tech ecosystem.
With the context out of the way, what I want to know is whether it's possible to retrofit a Thinkpad X201 (When I'm casually using my X200, while laying down and watching a video for example, I miss the touchpad), with modern hardware capable of running mostly/all free software. I'm honestly not sure what projects are out there, and which ones are promising. Now although I do crave more performance, the thought of going from this beut to ANY of the machines I see on the market is appalling.
In parallel, why do consumers love sodomizing themselves with whatever garbage companies throw at them? What happened to voting with one's wallet?
Anyway... I don't even know how to make headway into a project like this. I'd love a little guidance specifically about retrofitting X201s, as well as about retrofitting any of the prime era thinkpad shells for my needs.
I've had a long standing dream of moving into the woods tm, and I was wondering if there's good reference material for what important chemicals existed in preindustrial society, and the ways that they were fabricated and used, and ideally even a section that shows the modern methods of synthesis in comparision. Good examples of the materials I'm trying to build up to are charcoal, roman concrete etc. I realize that it's also skills, tools and non chemical fabrication techniques that will be relevant, but I feel like reference on agriculture and wooden construction are quite readily available.
My chemistry is quite bad, but I'm willing to relearn the important bits to get a solid understanding of these methods.
I also understand that this isn't probably the best forum to ask, but I'd love to know where to go looking for this info.
I haven't logged in to facebook in about a year now, and it's been over 4 years since I used it in any meaningful capacity. I'm sure that facebook will maintain some kind of shadow profile of me, since it's aware of my existence, and will do so even after I quit the platform, but I figure that there are technical barriers to maintaining these shadow accounts (I imagine that they don't store the entire edited comment history of all posts etc)
So I was wondering what types of steps should I take before I delete facebook. Is there a convenient way to overwrite all my posts and remove all my likes etc? Any way to overwrite the photos I've uploaded (only about 6 or 7), and delink myself from all the photos I've been tagged in etc (assume it's automatic after account deletion)
Sorry I don't have a clearer query, I haven't used it in so long that I don't even know everything I want to have removed about me, but I'm trying to delete myself as best as possible.
Thanks in advance!
Tech Demo/Review of the original XO-1:- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ioAsNfmpE8Q
Videos are basically only available for the original XO1, XO4 update comes with dual core, significantly lower power consumption and better materials, including video out. (Check the top link)
I think this is probably one of the coolest little machines that's ever been made. The screen is extremely performant in sunlight, it has an amazing battery life, It's FLOSS all the way down (fw, ec, graphics, peripherals etc) and I'd love to get my hands one one. I'd like to use it on my extended treks for taking notes at the end of the day. Since this device is optimised for use in areas where grid power isn't guaranteed, I think it will be a perfect fit into my workflow, my librebooted x200 doesn't have the battery life for this type of application!
I'm currently in negotiations with OLPC to procure 5 units (minimum order) for $230 not including shipping, tax and reship.
If 4 others are interested I can place the order and probably have it in a couple weeks.
Please do leave a comment if you are interested in coordinating this purchase.
