Has someone here done the math on self-hosting on the cloud/running locally/using the APIs directly/just paying for the subscriptions?
Some additional details on my specific situation (but also interested in general considerations):
- I’m living in Germany (26ct/kWh, no access to Claude) - I already have access to a box with 64GB RAM, no GPU though)
Someone mentioned in an earlier discussion that Bing AI could actively simulate long-term memory via the Bing search index (i.e., humans write about their interaction with Bing AI on the internet, which gets fed back into the Bing search index, which gets queries by Bing AI, etc).
It feels like we're "one bored dev" away from Bing AI being given full autonomy by piping its responses into curl and feeding it back the result. What would be the consequences?
Specifically, 1) Do you take notes? 2) Do you compile/rewrite notes? 3) Does spaced repetition work for you? 4) Do you have a methodology for extracting common themes/patterns across topics?

this might be somewhat of an odd question, but anyway:
I might soon move into a small studio apartment with just enough space for either a desk or a small dining table. Personally, I'm leaning towards the latter (I'd like to be able to invite friends over every now and then, and also enjoy the idea of having a space to come home to that doesn't look like another improvised office). The implication would be to downsize from my current setup (27 inch monitor, keyboard, mouse) to essentially a 13 inch rMBP.
This made me wonder: How would you go about being effective with such a setup? Can you recommend any tools/workflows/vim plugins for coding on a 13 inch screen only?
