I've never really been a user of smartwatches or fitness bands (I stick to my trusty Casio F91-W), but recently I've wanted a way to view Google Calendar notifications on my wrist. Is there an inexpensive device that can pair with an Android to do this, preferably one that respects privacy?

I am working a retail job right now, but I would like to switch gears and land a coding job. I have built things with Python, Drupal, WordPress, HTML/CSS, and Bash. All of my programming knowledge at this point is self-taught. How difficult is it to get up to speed and produce a portfolio that will get me hired?
Over the past few years, I've noticed that new tech releases aren't receiving the same level of excitement that tech releases even 5-6 years ago typically generated.
What's behind this phenomenon? Are we satisfied with the way that many tech product lines have matured, and don't need to look forward to new features? Has innovation slowed down?
